Chicago montage

Chicago, Illinois[Footnote 1] is the largest city in the U.S. State of Illinois[Footnote 2] and the third largest in the country. It is home to Harry Dresden and provides the setting for most of the Dresden Files stories.

Description

Chicago. It’s insane and violent and corrupt and vital and artistic and noble and cruel and wonderful. It’s full of greed and hope and hate and desire and excitement and pain and happiness. The air sings with screams and laughter, with sirens, with angry shouts, with gunshots, with music. It’s an impossible city, at war with itself, every horrible and wonderful thing blending together to create something terrifying and lovely and utterly unique.Harry Dresden[1]

Chicago is a crossroads both physical and metaphysical with dozens of ley lines running through or coalescing in the town or nearby.[2]

Ghost Story

In Ghost Story, the invasion of Chicago by the Fomor is well under way, so much so that even John Marcone is aware that he has to take measures above and beyond what he usually does in protecting his territory.[3] Fomor servitors are more visible than ever, kidnapping people and, particularly, minor talents to pressgang in their masters' service.[4] Fomors are expanding in other cities, which are taking a worse beating of Chicago, for lack of an organized defense.[5]

In the followup of Harry Dresden's killing, a number of people, both practitioners and non-magically gifted people, is spontaneously rising to counteract the threat - the Ragged Lady, Karrin Murphy and John Marcone among them. Groups such as the recovering Paranet provide communications and logistics,[5] and the newly formed Chicago Alliance provide action against the Fomors.[3]

Cold Days

In Cold Days, Molly Carpenter informs Harry Dresden that a lot of magical energy has been gathering at Demonreach. It will likely explode within a couple of days, taking Chicago and most of the Midwest with it.[6]

Bombshells

In Bombshells, a gala party has been thrown for the signature of a non-aggression treaty between the Fomor and the Swartalves. In a mission to retrieve Thomas Raith, Molly Carpenter, Justine and Andi Macklin find and disable a bomb the Fomor intended to explode during the gala, so that discredit is brought on the Svartalves.[7]
